Adam Billyeald, 35, of Hall Street, admitted stealing the DVDs, worth £143, from BHS in the Four Seasons shopping centre, on July 30.

Simon Greaves, mitigating, said Billyeald suffers with mental health problems: “This day he was feeling pretty depressed. He had money difficulties and he hadn’t been taking his anti-depressant medication.”

He said Billyeald made no effort to disguise the theft.

The court heard he had long-term drug problems, but the rate of his offending had slowed over the last few years.

“He has been keeping his head down,” said Mr Greaves. “He has been engaging with agencies in order to get help and assistance.”

He was sentenced to prison for ten weeks, suspended for 12 months, and ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge.

Magistrates warned him: “If you commit on more offence I suggest you bring your toothbrush because you will be going to prison.”
