Kie Taylor, 32, of Murray Street, admitted stealing the boooze, worth £26, on May 4, but both bottles were recovered.

He told police he was suffering from alcoholism at the time of offence, said prosecutor Simon Rowe.

The court heard he received a suspended sentence on June 4, which includes treatment for his drinking, and the thefts happened while he was on bail.

On Wednesday, district judge Jonathan Taaffe told him: “Had this information been before the court on June 4, it’s my view that it’s highly likely you wouldn’t have received a suspended sentence because then the court would have been told you were offending on bail.

“Be that as it may. The fact it’s being dealt with in this way has worked in your advantage. You have shown you are serious about mending your ways.”

He gave Taylor an eight week sentence, suspended for 12 months, to run at the same time as his current suspended sentence.

He also ordered Taylor to pay a £115 government surcharge and £85 costs.
