Christopher Garfield Green, 37, of Rotherham Road, Maltby, appeared at Rotherham Magistrates’ Court in the cells.

He had been arrested following the offence on Monday 3rd June.

Prosecuting, Mark Hughes said Green admitted the theft of three cases of lager from Asda, saying he was a ‘chronic alcoholic’.

But in committing the offence, Green was also in breach of a suspended prison sentence, imposed by Sheffield Crown Court last month.

District Judge Jonathan Taaffe said the case should go back to the crown court for a judge to decide whether the sentence should be activated.

A date will be fixed for Green to re-appear at Sheffield Crown Court. In the meantime he was released on bail, with a condition to comply with an alcohol treatment programme.
