The collision, between a blue Toyota Celica and a black Ford Focus, took place on the Southbound carriageway between J27 for Hucknall and J28 for Alfreton shortly after midday.

A spokesman for Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed a woman was taken to Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre with minor injuries.

An air ambulance attended the scene, causing the motorway to be blocked in both directions for a short period of time.

The Southbound stretch was then closed and diversions were put in place.

Highways England re-opened the carriageway at about 2.15pm.

A spokesman said the heavy congestion is now starting to clear.
