M1 crash involved four vehicles and an oil spillage

One lane on the M1 is now open following a crash on the M1, involving an oil spillage.

The accident, photographed by a driver (above), occurred at around 3pm near junction 29 on the northbound carriageway, and was reported to include a van, two cars and a lorry as well as a spillage of oil onto the road.

There are reports traffic is still severely congested on the route as far back as junction 27, although Highways East Midlands said they had re-opened a lane past the scene, with two lanes remaining closed as the incident continues.

Derbyshire police confirmed they received a call just before 3pm reporting the incident, which involved a lorry, a BMW, Mercedes Sprinter van and an Audi A4

A spokesperson said: "Lanes two and three were blocked very close to junction 29.

There are no reports so far of any major injuries or how the incident was caused.
