Lincs: Coastwatch man Chris at Probus meeting
The speaker at Gainsborough Probus Club’s latest meeting was Chris Lines of The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI).
Chris, who retired some years ago from The Royal Navy, is one of many volunteers who man watch towers around the coast of Britain.
NCI was founded in 1994 to restore a visual watch along the UK coastline following the loss of two Cornish fishermen immediately below a recently closed Coastguard station.
Today there are more than 50 stations in the UK, all manned by volunteers during daylight hours.
The primary aim is to take the ‘search’ out of search and rescue by monitoring all kinds of activity that may endanger the public.
More information on NCI can be obtained from National Enquiries on 0300 1111202 or East Region Enquiries on 01754 610900.
