Lincolnshire: Cost of rural crime revealed

Rural crime in Lincolnshire led to estimated losses of £1.8 million in 2012, new figures have revealed.

But the statistics from insurance firm NFU Mutual suggest that the UK wide cost of ‘agri-crime’ fell by 20 per cent.

Agricultural machinery tops the thieves’ wish list in Lincolnshire. Tools, oil and diesel are also popular targets.

Figures from the survey also suggest most rural crime is planned rather than opportunist.

“We’re starting to see the benefits from communities working hard with the police and wider industry,” said NFU Mutual agent Richard Evison.

“However, people shouldn’t become complacent - they need to make security a priority on their farms, businesses and homes.”
