Lily celebrates a century of smiles

Lily Douce was treated to a party at Redcote Care Home in Lea where the staff and her fellow residents think she is ‘wonderful’.

Around 30 family members gathered for the occasion, and Lily was her usual feisty self, at the centre of attention.

Redcote manager Jane Green said Lily was an inspiration.

“She is strong, independent and always smiling. She loves people and knows exactly what she wants,” said Jane.

“I think that’s how she’s got so far in life.”

Lily was born in Gainsborough, one of eight children.

She went to Ropery Road School and later worked at Lea School as a playtime assistant.

She married husband John on 29th May 1937 at All Saints’ Parish Church. He died in 1989 after 53 years of marriage.

Lily has had no children of her own, but enjoys the company of lots of nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces.

“Lily’s family came from all over the country to celebrate with her,” said Jane.

“Even her doctor and a local policeman came to wish her many happy returns.”

Lily has proven her strength and resilience by overcoming a brutal mugging in 2006.

“She has done really well to keep going after that and still ,lived at home for some time afterwards. It shows great strength of character,” said Jane.

“And the police man who helped her through the ordeal still comes to see her every birthday - including this one.”

“He really thinks a lot of her.”

As a young woman Lily also worked at H.Atkinson’s grocers store in Trinity Street.

And up until recently she was very involved with Lea Women’s Institute, having been a founder member of the group.

The party at the care home saw Lily presented with flowers, cards and gifts. And there was food and drinks for everyone.

As is customary for a centenarian, a card from the Queen is on its way in the post.
