PROPOSALS to slash opening hours of satellite libraries in Worksop have been revised by Notts County Council.
But the new figures mean that opening times for smaller libraries such as Balmoral, Langold and Carlton will still be halved from April 2011.
Balmoral Library will open for 9.5 hours, Langold for 10 and Carlton for 14 hours a week.
The move has angered people such as county councillor Sybil Fielding who said people of all ages rely heavily on smaller outlying libraries.
“They are taking choice away from people and I think this is an absolutely retrograde step,” she said.
“It’s really important that you have facilities within the community. I am aware that senior citizens might have free bus passes , but if you can’t access the bus it’s taking away a bit of your indepdendence.”
Notts County Council said it has listened to public feedback and ploughed an additional £70,000 back into the budget to lower planning opening hour reductions.
Cabinet member for culture and community Coun John Cottee said: “We’re also working to enhance the services we offer in our smaller libraries. We are meeting with community groups and parish councils to find out how they want to get involved with supporting and helping their local libraries from April this year.”
