Letwell: Popular street fayre returns this weekend

There will be a host of attractions ranging from snail racing to shire horse dray rides and a mock Civil War battle on the historic village street.

The festivities begin at 1.30 pm on Saturday afternoon with the foot soldiers from Sealed Knot marching into action with their pikes, muskets and cannons at the ready.

Thurcroft Brass Band will provide entertainment throughout the afternoon and a vitage double decker buses from the South Yorkshire Transport Musuem will be on show together with an array of farm machinery new and old.

The organising committee say the event will go ahead whatever the weather.

A spokesman said: “Rain or shine the fayre will go ahead. People seem to come whatever the weather anyway.”

“Everyone seems to like the old fashioned mix of attractions. The coconut shy, the pot smashing, the dray horse rides, the face painting, the bouncy castle and the home made teas in the village - it’s a traditional day out for all the family.”

Snail racing makes its debut at the show this year.

The spokesman added: “Visitors will be able to have a flutter on the races - we’ve been training the snails over the last few weeks, and it’s surprising how quickly they can move up and down the track with the right kind of encouragement.”

Proceeds from the free event go to support the upkeep of Letwell’s medieval church St Peter’s.
