LETTER: Fond memories of Worksop past

It bought back many happy memories for me of when I first moved to Worksop in the summer of 1972.

Indeed, our area office, Kent Instruments of Luton, had their North Midlands process control office right in the middle of the precinct, which is now the Priory Centre. Where Wilkinson is now, was our office, on the second floor. The ground floor was a kitchen centre, and the top floor was the Intercon night club. Oh what fun we had there at the weekend.

I would love it if the Worksop Guardian was able to print a picture of the Intercon or perhaps some of your readers have stories to tell of the 70s and 80s.

However, just as vivid to me from 40 years ago was the Cardex system that our office used to keep a record of maintenance work done in our area. Yes, in the days before smart phones, we took a card out of the front of the box, carried out the work, then put the date it was completed and signed it. This way we provided an efficient and uncomplicated way of doing things.

In these modern days of countless apps, why oh why is so much work to our roads, pavements, general routine maintenance and safety work not carried out, when in the old days it was?

Yes, give me the 70s any day.
