Launch of struggling Thornberry Animal Sanctuary's '˜Worth a Pound' plea

The scheme was launched by the Mayor of Rotherham, councillor Lyndsay Pitchley of Rotherham Borough Council, at the struggling sanctuary this week.

Through the Worth a Pound campaign, staff hope to raise money to help offset their £108,000 annual vet bills.

Thornberry’s general manager, Keith Holland, said: “We know it’s tough out there at the minute, which is why all we’re asking for is a pound.

“We’re close to capacity and the bills keep adding up.

“Thornberry has such generous supporters. We don’t want to over burden them, but if each one and their family and friends gave just one pound, potentially we could look after neglected and poorly animals without financial worry for the next year.

“And what’s a pound these days? A packet of crisps? A small coffee? If you lost it down the back of your sofa you wouldn’t miss it, but it means the world to the animals in our care here.”

The Mayor of Rotherham echoed these sentiments at the campaign’s launch.

She said: “I’m a supporter of Thornberry and have been for many years.I hope the Worth a Pound campaign helps the sanctuaryto carry on improving the lives of these neglected animals. I’m very proud to be the first to donate to the cause.”

Donations can also be dropped off in person at the sanctuary, which is based on Todwick Road.
