Ken still blowing strong after 75 years

VETERAN Salvation Army band member Ken Beard has been recognised by his Worksop church colleagues for 75 years’ service.

Ken, 91, started playing music when he was just seven-years-old, and he is still going strong.

He plays baritone brass, but his musical stint has seen him play almost every instrument in the band, after joining the choir back in 1937.

Said Ken, of Farndale, Worksop: “I have always enjoyed it. I was born into a Salvation Army family so it has been a way of life for me.”

His father had been the band master in Worksop for 25 years and Ken immediately followed in his footsteps for a further 15 years. Between them they delivered 40 years of unbroken service as band masters.

Ken’s band colleagues presented him with a certificate to mark his 75 year anniversary with the band.

Friend and Salvation Army colleague Edna Stavely said: “He is very well liked and respected. We look forward to many more happy years in his company.”
