Non-urgent services such as outpatient clinics and some scheduled operations will be cancelled in many hospitals after British Medical Association members backed calls for a strike.

The doctors’ union said that more than 37,000 doctors were balloted, with 76 per cent taking part in the vote.

A massive 98 per cent of respondents voted to strike.

The action will take place over three days, with junior doctors providing only emergency care for 24 hours from 8am on December 1, followed by full walkouts from 8am to 5pm on December 8 and 16.

Doctors’ dispute with the Government centres on new contracts being imposed by Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt which they say will means worse pay and working conditions.
