Jobs in doubt at Worksop Gamestation store

Game Group called in administrators on Monday, putting thousands of jobs at risk, including around five at the branch on Bridge Place in Worksop town centre,

Parent company Game Group - Britain’s biggest retailer of video games - employs about 10,000 staff worldwide across 1,300 stores.

More than half of its staff work across 609 stores in the UK and Ireland.

Mike Jervis, joint administrator and partner at PwC said the group had recently faced serious cashflow and profit issues.

He also blamed high fixed costs and an ambitious international expansion.

Online-only video game retailers are also thought to have hit the store profits hard.

Mr Jervis said despite these challenges he believed there was room for a specialist game retailer in the UK.

“As a result we are hopeful that a going concern sale of the business is achievable,” he said.

Another Gamestation spokesman said that customers could expect disruption their online orders over the next few days, and that in-store refunds will also not be possible.

“Until further notice, we will not be able to offer refunds or exchanges for products purchased either before the administration or from the date of the administration and no new pre-orders can be taken until further notice,” he said.

“You can still buy pre-owned products at great prices in your local store or online. If you trade in a pre-owned software item then you will still be able to accure reward points and use your trade in to exchange for another item. You will not be able to trade in pre-owned software for cash until further notice.”

He added: “We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
