The officers were trying to help a man who appeared to be under the influence of drugs, when Lee Cassell told them to leave him alone, on Leeming Street, at 1.15am, on Saturday, May 7.

Prosecutor Robert Carr said: “He shouted and swore at them and told them he would take all four officers on, one after the other.

“He was told to walk away but he continued to swear and was detained.”

The court heard the offence put him in breach of a suspended sentence, imposed in November 23, 2017, for burglary.

Magistrates were told that Cassell failed to turn up for court on May 25, and he had missed meetings with his probation worker in March and May.

David Grant, mitigating, said: “He was with a friend who was in a very poor state. One or two people had spat at him. He tried to keep people away from him.

“He genuinely believed he didn’t have to go to court after spending seven hours in the police station.”

The court heard that although Cassell had been evicted from his last address, it was still his responsiblity to keep track of appointments with the probation service.

Cassell, 42, of no fixed abode, admitted being drunk and disorderly and failing to comply with the order, when he appeared at Mansfield Magistrates Court, on Friday.

Magistrates said they had “no alternative” but to activate the suspended sentence and he was jailed for 12 weeks.
