The claim was made by the terror group’s Amaq news agency.

Its statement referred to the attacker - who was shot dead by police - as ‘a soldier of the Islamic State’.

Many were injured in the attack which saw a man drive a car into pedestrians along the length of Westminster Bridge before crashing into railing outside Parliament.

Armed with a knife he then attempted to enter the grounds of Parliament killing PC Keith Palmer in the process.

Metropolitan Police Acting Commissioner Craig Mackey revealed today that he witnessed the attack.

He said: “I personally was a witness to yesterday’s events, including part of the tragic attack on Pc Palmer.

“As with all police officers, I therefore had a duty to secure my evidence and due statements yesterday evening, which I did before resuming my role leading our response to this incident.”
