Illegal parking addressed on Bridge Street

The council acted after traders and shoppers highlighted the traffic disruption in the pedestrianised zone on Worksop’s busiest shopping street.

The order will be in place for six months and could be made permanent. It could equally be revoked if the order is not working sufficiently.

Coun Richard Jackson, cabinet member for transport and highways, said: “This pilot traffic regulation order is being introduced to cut down on non-essential trips and in response to calls from traders and members of the public to preserve the pedestrianised area of Bridge Street as much as possible.”

“The pilot means that once the order has been introduced there will be a period of monitoring over the next six months to see how it works in practice and to see if it helps tackle the problem successfully.”

Traffic is currently prohibited from entering the street but exemptions exist which allow vehicles to enter the pedestrianised zone before 10am and after 3.30pm, with special access permit holders, including disabled permit holders, and maintenance and bullion vehicles allowed to enter at any time.

The pilot order, to begin in April, would not allow any vehicles on Bridge Street, except for loading between the hours of 4pm to 10am.

The proposal removes access for all blue badge holders and special access permit holders on all pedestrianised sections of Bridge Street and Bridge Place.

Bassetlaw Council is currently reviewing the number of designated bays in its car parks to ensure there is capacity to meet any growth in demand.

Blue badge holders will also still be able to park on single or double yellow lines for up to three hours, in neighbouring streets so long as there are no restrictions on loading or unloading at that particular location.

The council say the order also bans vehicles over 36’ feet long from entering Bridge Place and Bridge Street due to damage to pavements, road signs and other street furniture such as seating and lamp columns.
