Ice hockey: Hot Legs for Coventry Blaze after losing out to Sheffield Steelers

The first cut wasn't the deepest for Coventry Blaze, who have got over the disappointment of losing transfer-target Jesse Schultz to Sheffield Steelers. Blaze were interested in the Canadian winger, but lost out to the Elite League champions.

However Coventry, who finished eighth in a ten-team league last season but reached the Play Off finals, have signed 21-year-old forward Liam Stewart - son of pop icon Rod Stewart and super-model Rachel Hunter.

The London-born forward played just 13 games for Alaska Aces, due to injury last season, scoring one goals and four point.

Blaze coach Danny Stewart said: “Liam is a very important signing for us. He adds to our depth which will be crucial.

“With many teams looking to play four-lines next season, it’s important we have capable guys that can take minutes away from our top-six forwards and produce themselves. He is a very capable penalty killer, very good on face-offs and reliable at both ends.”

The coach added: “His season was cut short last year in Alaska due to injury but he is healthy now and excited for this next challenge.”

Stewart said: “The injury is fully recovered now and I am itching to get back on the ice to start the season. One of the biggest things when I decided to sign in the Elite League was being able to come home and play good competitive hockey and also be close to family. I’m excited to get to work and get things rolling this season with the Blaze.”
