Hucknall taxi driver's U-turn injured biker

Dean Mathew Jarmos, 36, of Dexters Grove, admitted driving without due care and attention before a trial scheduled for Tuesday, after initially denying the offence.

The collision happened on Manvers Street in Sneinton, Nottingham, on Sunday July 19, last year, at around 7pm.

George Speed, prosecuting, read from the statement of the rider: “All of a sudden a silver vehicle pulled out in front of me and I hit the wing.

“I went over the handlebars. I was shocked and experienced excruciating pain in my right wrist.

“I heard the driver of the vehicle get out and say ‘Sorry mate.’”

Another witness said: “All of a sudden the taxi did a U-turn. The motorbike had no chance to avoid it and he collided with the wing of the car.”

The rider, who was described as experienced, had been riding for nearly 40 years and was wearing a high-visibility jacket.

He was taken to the Queen’s Medical Centre where doctors tried to pull his wrist back into place. It emerged that his wrist was broken and he needed gas and air, and morphine, to manage the pain. Five days later he underwent a four-hour operation to have a pin and plate fitted in his wrist.

“Since the crash I can’t even tie my own shoelaces,” read Mr Speed from the rider’s statement.

Jarmos, who told the court he could not afford a solicitor, was given a £300 fine and told to pay costs of £300 and a victim surcharge of £30.

Six points were added to his previously clean license.
