Marcin Nowakowski, 36, pleaded guilty to the theft of £14.25 worth of chocolate at Morrisons on High Street on August 17.

Mansfield Magistrates’ heard how Nowakowski, who is now living in supported accomodation at the framework centre on Sherwood Street, was homeless at the time of the theft.

The court heard how he had lost his job and had not eaten for two days at the time of the incident.

Lisa Morris, prosecuting, said: “The Morrisons security guard saw the man carrying a black shoulder bag and he filled it with chocolate and left the store without attempting to pay.

“This man went into the store attending to steal and had no means of paying for the goods.”

Defending himself, Nowakowski said: “I would like to apologise for what I did, it’s only my own fault.

“I was so hungry and I tried to do something to feel better about it.

“So I went to Morrisons to try and get something to eat that was full of nutrition, and they caught me.

“After that I spent another week on a park bench.”

This offence put Nowakowski in breach of conditional bail from a previous similar offence.

The case was adjourned for a probation review.
