Home grower caught by cops

John Arthur Cutts, 47, of Frederick Street admitted to producing 1004 grams of cannabis on 14th August at Worksop Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He also admitted supplying 5.02 grams of cannabis on 12th August.

Co-accused, Anna-Marie Day, 38, of Frederick Street, also admitted supplying 5.02 grams of cannabis on 12th August.

Majorie Kirkham-Smith, prosecuting, told the court that the pair went to a post office on Gateford Road on 12th August with a jiffy bag package to post.

“The woman behind the counter became suspicious because of the smell and the police were called,” she said.

The package was discovered to contain cannabis. Officers viewed CCTV footage and identified the pair.

Officers went to their home address and arrested them. While there they found the cannabis plants growing in the loft.

Day told police she had received £250 from her brother’s ex-partner to send her the drugs, and had only made £40 profit.

David Verity, defending Day, told the court she regretted being involved in this matter.

“This lady asked he to send her some cannabis and foolishly she agreed to do that,” he said.

“This is a one-off offence and I’m sure she wont be back in this court again in the future.”

The court heard that the cannabis plants had a retail value of £10,040 and a wholesale value of between £5,000 and £6,500.

Cutts, who was unrepresented told the court he thought the valuation of the crop was ‘highly exaggerated’.

The bench referred Cutts to Notts Crown Court for sentencing, at a date to be arranged.

Day’s case, which will be sentenced in the magistrates court, was adjourned until Monday so that probation reports could be prepared.
