Heritage centre reflects good old school days

The display was officially opened last Friday by the Gainsborough and District Heritage Association and showcases hundreds of photos alongside chalkboards, easels and desks.

The exhibition marks the beginning of a series of new exhibitions by the group at the former post office and telephone exchange at the junction of North Street and Spital Terrace, which has been converted into a museum and heritage centre.

The group of volunteers were able to renovate the exhibition centre after receiving £25,000 of funding from the Lincolnshire Cooperative Big Birthday Award last August.

Hundreds of artefacts are still hidden away on the upper floors of the centre after being locked away in storage at Morton Chapel for more than a decade.

The centre’s summer exhibition will feature jubilee and coronation memorabilia, and the centre will also exibit artefacts from Gainsborough’s trade and travel.

Chairman Susan Edlington said the exhibition, which is the first in the town since the 1930’s, has attracted interest from across the country.
