Help is at hand for our wounded lads and lasses

It was a poignant day as a group from Bassetlaw travelled to North Yorkshire to visit Help for Heroes’ Catterick base.

Bassetlaw Council chairman Coun Ian Campbell, together with Help for Heroes regional co-ordinator Tony Eaton, organised the visit for the people who have donated money to the chairmans’ charities.

The group of 10 who visited the Catterick base consisted of councillors, council staff, business owners and members of Retford Civic Society - all of whom have helped to raise funds for charity.

After listening to a presentation from Help for Heroes staff about where the money raised will be spent, the group were taken on a special tour of the brand-new recovery centre Phoenix House.

Coun Campbell said it was a ‘fantastic’ and ‘emotional’ day.

“It was great to physically see where the money I have raised this year will be spent and how it will benefit the men and women that come home injured or wounded,” he said.

“The visit was also to thank some of the people that have helped me this year and to see how the money they have contributed to will be spent. The money which will be handed over at the end of my term will go along way to helping our brave service personnel.”

Tony Eaton said: “It is because of the overwhelming response from the general public that Help for Heroes has been able to provide this support, but there is still so much more to do. With the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan coming ever closer, people may think the job is done but the battle will have only just begun.”
