Worksop Magistrates’ Court heard that Frederick Archer, 58, of Harewood Court, had purchesed the high-powered air fifle five years ago and used it mainly for shooting rats and target practice on land near his home.

When police went to his house to take the gun from him, they found him sitting in his car smoking cannabis.

Defending, Nicola Gray said: “He thought the gun was under the limits required for a licence.”

“He also suffers with arthiritis and used the cannabis as a way of easing the pain, but he is now seeking alternative medical help for that.”

Archer was given a 12-month suspended community order and fined £145
