The Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne. confirmed that the site has been granted’Housing Zone’ status as part of his 2015 budget announcement on the 18th of March.

The bid for Housing Zone status was submitted in partnership between Bassetlaw Council and Harworth Estates , and was drawn up after extensive consultation with local community representatives.

Coun Jo White, portfolio holder for regeneration at Bassetlaw Council, said that the new builds would put Harworth and Bircotes ‘back on the map.’

She said: “The Government has recognised that great efforts are being made to bring about a transformation in Harworth and Bircotes following the closure of the colliery.”

“This will help enable a step change for the town and the partnerships between the council, land owner and local community will see the area truly put on the map.”

“I am delighted that these efforts are now getting the national recognition they deserve.”

According to the council, Zone designation will ensure that the delivery of over 1500 new homes will be brought forward quicker than originally planned and will also mean that an additional area of brownfield land can be released for further housing.

Coun June Evans, chair of Harworth and Bircotes Town Council, said: “We are taking great strides forward in Harworth and Bircotes and in the last couple of years have seen the development of new supermarkets, a neighbourhood plan and an upsurge in interest from house builders and businesses looking to invest and locate in the area.” “Working in partnership with Harworth Estates will see improvements to community facilities and also to our town centre.”
