GUEST COLUMN: See Sherwood Forest through the ages, by Coun John Knight

Popular re-enactment group Dogs of War who entertained crowds during the recent Easter weekend will return to Sherwood Forest country park next month.

The Nottinghamshire-based group are set to appear at the forthcoming Sherwood Through the Ages event which is moving from its usual autumn place in the events calendar to take place on the final Bank Holiday weekend in May.

It is organised by the county council in partnership with EventPlan and takes place on May 29 and 30. The event highlights a wide range of periods in history witnessed at our world famous Sherwood Forest from the Romans to the present day.

The Dogs of War re-enactment group host a medieval court, crafts and other period demonstrations in the heart of Robin Hood’s iconic Sherwood Forest, and are traditionally based close to the Major Oak during the weekends that they attend.

Led by James Askins, they are a popular draw each year at Sherwood, depicting life in the 1300s, where people can see how medieval camps were set up and watch members of the Dogs of War preparing food and entertaining crowds as they would have done in that period of history.

James said: “Sherwood is a wonderful setting and we always enjoy holding events there. People are so engaging and are absorbed as we demonstrate what life would have been like during the Middle Ages. We look forward to coming back again to take part in the Sherwood Through the Ages event in a few weeks’ time.”
