GUARDIAN ROSE: Motherless litter of newborn puppies survive thanks to selfless veterinary nurse’s round-the-clock care

A Worksop veterinary nurse who took on the challenge of hand-rearing a litter of yorkshire terrier puppies after their mother was unable to look after them has been presented with a Guardian Rose for her selflessness.

Suzhy Winfield, head veterinary nurse at Vetsavers on Newcastle Avenue, was honoured with the accolade in a surprise ceremony on Thursday, October 15.

The animal lover has been praised for dedicating six weeks to raising the adorable pups, named Lollipop, Ralph and Daisy.

She had to bottle-fed the puppies every two hours at work and would take them home every night in a heated carrier where she would continue to bottle-feed them through the night.

Thanks to her round-the-clock care, the puppies have since thrived and found loving homes in the Worksop area.

Suzhy, said: “I would do it all over again. It was so rewarding to give the puppies a chance at life and I formed a bond with them that will never leave me.

“I have a particular soft spot for Daisy- she wasn’t breathing when she was born, but thankfully we managed to bring her back.

“When the pups came back in for their jabs recently they shot out of their cages at me, tails wagging. They knew exactly who I was which was so moving.”

Angela Hancock, who adopted Daisy this month, contacted the Guardian to nominate Suzhy for the award. She said: “What Suzhy has done is amazing and we really wanted to thank her for her kindness. She puts her all into her job.”
