The shooting star spectacle is set to begin on Monday evening, and will peak on the night of Monday December 14.

At its height Geminids produces up to 100 shooting stars an hour.

The annual phenomenon is caused when the Earth passes through the debris trail of the asteroid 3200 Phaethon.

Geminids were first observed in 1862 much more recently than other meteor showers such as the Perseids (36 AD) and Leonids (902 AD).
