A gay clergyman has won the right to appeal after he lost an employment tribunal against the church in Nottinghamshire.

Canon Jeremy Pemberton was stopped from taking up a new post as a chaplain at King’s Mill Hospital after marrying his partner in 2014.

The tribunal ruled that Mr Pemberton was not discriminated against at a hearing last year.

It argued that he defied Church law when he married Laurence Cunnington.

The tribunal, which claimed discrimination, rules in favour of the Church of England in November.

But the former Bishop of Southwell has said the Employment Appeal Tribunal will hold a two-day hearing considering the legal arguments about the case.

The hearing is expected to take place later this year.
