Gainsborough: Visit the last open days of 2015 at the Model Railway Society

Society chairman, Chris Wragg, said: “Many people have quite a long break from work or school at this time of year, but there aren’t a great deal of things happening.

“A visit to our model railway provides people with a good opportunity to get away from the turkey and chocolates, without needing to be too energetic.

“Our model railway which represents the line between London Kings Cross and Leeds in the days of steam and the early days of diesels, is much bigger than the standard train set, both in terms of the trains being bigger and our railway, which we have built over almost 70 years, taking up the whole of an old school.

“It needs 10 people to run and we have almost200 locomotives, including such famous machines at Flying Scotsman and Mallard.”

The open days are on Sunday, December 27, and Monday, December 28, from 1.30pm to 6pm at the clubrooms in Florence Terrace, Gainsborough.

Admission is £4 for adults and £3 for children and senior citizens. A family ticket is £10.

As you work around the disply you will see authentic replicas of famous locomotives such as the Flying Scotsman, Papyrus and Mallard.

The West Riding Ltd and The Yorkshire Pullman are two of the many express trains depicted on the railway, along with many more mundane services, express freights, local freights, as well as local passenger services.

The period modelled is from the late 1940’s to the end of the British rail steam, with acknowledgement of the diesel era.

There is also a model of Kings Cross station which can accommodate 10 trains.
