Gainsborough: Unemployment is continuing to drop

People claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance in Gainsborough is beginning to drop each year.

In September there were 886 people claiming Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) in Gainsborough which is a decrease of 3.2 per cent from last month.

At the same time last year there were 1,018 claimants so over the last 12 months there has been a drop of 13 per cent.

Across the whole of Lincolnshire there are 6,667 claiming JSA for September which is a 3.2 per cent drop from August.

And over the 12 months it has dropped by 21.7 per cent as there are now 1,850 less claimants.

Becky Newborough, senior operations leader for the Department of Work and Pensions and Lincolcnshire Job Centre Plus, said: “Seasonal recruitment in the town has started and businesses are taking on extra workers.

“We are working to encourage people to travel outside of Gainsborough to look for employment. Some people think if you live in Gainsborough you have to work in Gainsborough.

“Gainsborough has good transport links. They have a regular train service to Sheffield and a good bus service.

“There is a wide world out there.

“We are trying to broaden everyone’s horizons.

“We are pushing for that.

“And we are working with employers to have more flexible working hours to suit public transport.”

“We are listening to both employers and customers.”

People aged between 18 and 24-years-old has also gone down.

Young people claiming JSA in Lincs in September is 1,635 which is a drop of 3.8 per cent and compared tolast year this is down by 33,3 per cent.

And the number of claimants in Gainsborough for September is 235 which is down by 26.6 per cent from the same time last year.
