Gainsborough teenager finishes sixth at National Games, five months after debut

Gainsborough athlete Heather Cooke finished sixth in the National Games hurdles, just five months after making her debut in the sport.

Cooke was in action at Bedford at the end of August, taking part in the 300m hurdles in the national competition.

She came second in her heat in 45.81, easily making the final, in which she finished sixth.

Dad Gary told the Standard: “She was initially disappointed with her place but as her coach pointed out she has literally been competing at the event for five months, and to achieve a bronze at English Schools, bronze at the Northern Championships and get to the final atthe National Championships is a super achievement.”

Next up for Cooke is the finale to the outdoor season, when she represents North East England at the UK School Games on 12th September, at Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield’s final event .

The teenager will compete in the 300m, not the hurdles.

Gary said: “This will be a great experience and a great way to finish the season, but her personal expectations are realistic as this not her best event.”

After the School Games she’s going to take a well earned rest, before indoor meetings in the winter.

Proud father Gary added: “She has trained extremely hard, usually four times a week, andcompeted regularly in very high quality events.”
