Gainsborough: Students get a taste of working life from Galatia

Stuart McDonald, Northern Region Health and Safety Manager from Willmott Dixon Partnerships, Nigel Tomlinson, Galatia Production Manager and Kathryn Murdoch, Galatia Customer and Community Partner, spent the afternoon at CLIP, working with four students who are looking for construction employment, teaching them the importance of customer service and health and safety in the workplace.

And all four students have been offered interviews for a work placement on the Willmott Dixon ‘Opening Doors Programme.’

These will be formal interviews and all students will receive valuable feedback from the interviewees on their performance.

If successful a person specific work placement will be arranged to fit the young person’s work ambitions.

This leading to other opportunities such as a reference from Galatia and a guaranteed interview for any future apprenticeships within Galatia.

Flare tutor, Sarah-Jayne Kidd said: “This has been a super opportunity for all four students to be able to build their knowledge about health and safety in the work place.

“I think it is wonderful that all four students are able to have some valuable interview experience which will hopefully lead to some great work experience.”

Dallum Halloran, 18, said: “It has been good to help me work towards my future and it will hopefully help me get a job.”

Customer and Community Partner, Kathryn Murdoch, said: “This has been an excellent opportunity for Galatia to pass on their Health and Safety knowledge to the next generation of construction workers.”

CLIP runs a full-time programme for 16 to 18-year-olds as well as part-time programmes for adults seeking learning for enjoyment or to return to employment.

Flare is a programme based at The Foundry Learning Centre and there are still places available for anyone who would like to join.
