Gainsborough: Society examines the history of the fine art of wallpapering

Her talk this time was the historical use of wallpaper in the British and French interior from 1685.

Members learned that the first serious use of wallpaper in Britain began in the late 17th Century and designs were influenced by the more costly use of fabric, cut velvet and damask which inspired flock wallpaper.

The arrival of the first hand- painted Chinese wallpapers is thought to have helped develop the softer pastel shades used in interiors after 1730 throughout Europe.

The next meeting of the Society is on 7th May when John Ericson will speak on Inn Insignia: Pub signs, the Art work and the Stories behind the names.
