Gainsborough: Refurbishment at train station is brought forward

Friends of The Brigg and Lincoln Lines want the station, behind Marshall’s Yard, ‘bringing into the 21st Century’ and improvements made to the passenger service.

The group is celebrating after hearing that Network Rail has brought forward plans to replace the footbridges at the station - and also at the station in Brigg - by two years.

Work is now set to start in 2014, rather than in 2106 as first thought.

A spokesman for the Friends of The Brigg and Lincoln Lines said: “It was once described as something you would find in war torn Beirut but thanks to a new local rail user group (Friends of the Brigg and Lincoln lines ) there seems to be a brighter future for Gainsborough Central Station.”

It is also believed there are plans to clean the graffitti on the signal box.

Gainsborough Central Station has three trains a week, all of which run on a Saturday, and run from Sheffield to Cleethorpes. A spokesman for Network Rail said: “We are planning to replace the bridges at Gainsborough Central and Brigg in 2014/15 due to the funding settlement for our next control period as they are due for upgrading. Schemes for both are in planning and we’ll announce nearer the time exactly when they are going to take place.”

No rthern Rail said it would like to set up a partnership with the group.

A company spokesman said: “We are delighted to have the Friends of the Brigg and Lincoln Lines rail user group on-board and are always happy to discuss station improvements projects such as clearing weeds, tidying platforms and painting fences. We would urge them to get in touch so to discuss a partnership to improve the station environment.”
