Work is set to start in May on a new £1m food store on the site of the former Jack and Jill pub in Heapham Road.

The new outlet will replace Lincolnshire Co-op’s current store in Queensway.

All existing staff will relocate to the site and six new jobs will be created.

Customers will benefit from a wider range of groceries, chilled and frozen food products as well as an in-store bakery and an ATM.

There will be 23 car parking spaces, including four disabled bays, available for customers of the new food store which will be open from 7am until 10pm, seven days a week.

Lincolnshire Co-op Store Development Manager, Matthew Wilkinson, said: “We’re excited to begin work on our new food store in Gainsborough which will offer the community a wider range of products and easier access.”

“With building set to start soon we hope that by the end of November we’ll be able to welcome our first customers.”

“As a co-operative, we share all our profits with the local community and part of that is investing in and improving our services.”

“Our popular store in Queensway has outgrown its current premises so we are delighted to be able to provide a bigger store to better serve the community.”

“We already have 19,000 members in Gainsborough and the surrounding area who use our nearby services and we hope this new store will attract even more members to the Society.”

Members benefit from dividend on their purchases, plus a bonus at the end of the year.

Gainsborough town manager, Samantha Mellows, said: “Gainsborough Town Partnership welcomes the development of a new Co-Op store in Gainsborough.”

“We believe this shows that Lincolnshire Co-Operative has confidence in Gainsborough as a location to expand. Gainsborough Town Partnership supports the creation of new employment opportunities for local people along with the improvement of facilities for the town’s growing population.”

The 3,000 square foot outlet will have energy-saving features including doors on fridges and freezers, a heat reclamation system, LED lights and motion sensors in back office areas.

Local architect Derek Morris, based in Fenton, has designed the building and Metheringham-based contractor Taylor Pearson Construction has been appointed to build the store.
