Gainsborough: Memory Walk in aid of Alzheimer’s Society

During the previous walks Gainsborough Lions have raised more than £5,000 with just 30 people taking part in the first walk and currently they have had 205 people register for this year’s walk, including 55 chidlren,

This walk is the only registered Memory Walk in Lincolnshire, excluding North and North East Lincolnshire.

Ralph Jones from Gainsborough Lions Club said: “Last year we had one walker from Newcastle and several from Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire so Gainsborough has been well placed on the map.”

The walk is approximately two miles long and suitable for people of all ages.

It starts at Richmond Park heading through Morton, up onto the Trent Bank and then back to Richmond Park.

Refreshments will be available and Lions Club member, George Ilincuta, will be making pumpkin soup, available free to all walkers.

Money raised from the walk will go towards helping local Dementia sufferers and their carers.

Ralph added: “It is estimated that one person in three will die with some sort of dementia, and we have to realise and accept that it is not just an old persons disease.”

“There have been instances of people in their 30’s and 40’s being diagnosed with this terrible disease.

“Indeed my wife, a former teacher at Castle Hills, was forced to retire from teaching at the age of 55 due to the early onset of Alzheimer’s disease.”

People can register online at www.memorywalk.org.uk/gainsborough or they can turn up to register on the day at Richmond Park.

Registration starts at 1pm and the walk commences at 2pm.
