Following World War One the town got together to raise contributions to build a new hospital wing.

Work started in 1918 and it was opened in 1922.

It became known as the peace wing with medical services downstairs and the nurses home upstairs.

It is now the Accident and Emergency department.

There was a war memorial placed in the outside wall and this was moved when Accident and Emergency was extended.

The Accident and Emergency department is now a minor injuries unit which will treat people with minor injuries and illness, for example, sprains, cuts and grazes, broken bones, bites and stings.

A small service will be held on Wednesday, November 11, at noon.

There will be a minute’s silence and a short memorial service.

It is hoped that this will become an annual event and the memorial will become an active site.
