Best In Town Pizza and Marmaris, both on Silver Street and Florentino’s Pizzeria on Market Street all scored one out of five when they were visited in April.

The food hygiene rating, known as Scores on the Doors, aims to highlight hygiene standards in pubs, restaurants, take-aways and clubs across the borough.

In total there are 12 eateries in the town with a score of just one - which means major improvement is required.

But Eric Aldogan, owner of Best In Town Pizza and Marmaris, said his low scores were due to the council inspector ‘having a personal problem with him’.

He said: “Our last inspection was a four and this time was a one.”

“I have complained to the council as I feel the inspector gave us the score because of personal reasons, not because there is anything wrong with my businesses.”

Just three establishments were given a two rating, while 24 were declared ‘generally satisfactory’ by scoring three.

But there is plenty of good news for Gainsborough diners as the majority of businesses scored four (52 places) or the highest possible rating of five, which was achieved by 127 businesses.

And one of those is the Sweyn Forkbeard on Silver Street.

The pub’s manager, Tina Storey, said she was ‘delighted’ with the top rating.

She added: “Standards of hygiene at the pub are of paramount importance. The staff work hard to ensure the pub offers the highest levels of hygiene at all time and we are delighted our efforts have been recognised with a five star rating.”

A council spokesman said The National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme helps to promote high performing businesses and enables consumers to make informed choices.

“The hygiene rating shows how closely the business is meeting the requirements of food hygiene law,” she said.

“Ratings are based on how the food is handled, the condition and cleanliness of the premises, how food is kept safe and the management of the business – which includes good record keeping.”

“This encourages businesses to maintain the highest standards of food hygiene ensuring the best quality for residents. Food hygiene officers work closely with businesses to ensure high standards.”

“If a business is unhappy with their rating they can appeal, exercise their right to reply or request a revisit.”
