Gainsborough cafe staff ‘very upset’ after messy break-in

AN INTRUDER who threw a brick through the window of a Gainsborough cafe and wrecked the shop inside made off with just a few mouthfuls of food.

Cream cafe in Marshall’s Yard was broken into just after 11.30pm on Saturday 10th November. A passer-by had called the police after seeing the cafe had been trashed.

“It was a complete mess when we got there,” said owner Mette Robinson.

“There was a smashed window, food had been bitten into and thrown everywhere, tables and chairs were over turned. It was very upsetting.”

Mrs Robinson said the popular cafe was forced to close on Sunday - one of its busiest days - while the clean-up began.

She said the business had lost ‘quite a bit of money’ because of the actions of the individual.

“We had four staff who spent seven hours cleaning up on Sunday. We have had to replace a lot of things and do a really deep clean.”

Mrs Robinson said the intruder had clearly cut himself gaining entry, and blood was smeared on the cafe furniture.

She said: “Everything is homemade in the cafe so from a food safety point of view we have had to be extremely vigilant and throw it all away.”

“I have been busy baking more stock.”

“It has been very upsetting for our staff but they have been brilliant and helped to get the business back to normal.”

“I would also like to thank the member of the public who raised the alarm on Saturday night. If the intruder had not been interrupted, who knows what damage he might have caused.”

Police are asking witnesses to call 101 with any information, quoting incident 516 of 10th November 2012.
