Fund raises £30k for cancer causes

The trustees of Thurcroft Cancer Fund, which has been up and running for eight years, presented the money to the charities at a recent event at the Gordon Bennett Memorial Hall in Thurcroft.

The money had been raised over the last 12 months solely through proceeds from the shop on Green Arbour Road.

And every year the volunteers and representatives from the charities get together for a presentation evening and celebration.

Macmillan, PACT, Neurocare, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Western Park Hospital all received £4,000 each, while Rotherham Hospice and Amy’s Retreat got £5,000 each.

Michael Mosley, who helps run the shop along with his wife Kay, other trustees and local volunteers, said the night had been a huge success.

“Representatives from all of the charities were there on the night to collect their cheques,” he said.

“We had a really good evening, with entertainment from a local singer. We also raised another £250 for the cancer fund on the night by holding a raffle.”

A spokesman for Neurocare, one of the charities to benefit from a donation, said: “Everybody who works at the Thurcroft shop volunteers their time in helping to sort, display and sell goods for charity.”

“Every year we are invited to a presentation evening where we are treated to great night of entertainment and presented with their kind donation.”

“Thank you to all the volunteers at the fund for their super support.”

The shop, which relies on the hard work and dedication of unpaid volunteers, excepts all sorts of unwanted second hand goods.

“People can call into the shop with anything they no longer want or have use for,” added Mr Mosley.

“We also take electrical equipment, but all of this is properly tested before it goes into the shop to be sold.”

And despite times being tough, local people are being as generous as ever with their donations. Although last December’s bad weather did have an impact as the shop was forced to close for almost three weeks.

Mr Mosley thanked all of the local businesses who had donated prizes for the raffle on the night.

Anyone who has any goods they would like to donate can call into the shop at 52 Green Arbour Road, Thurcroft Monday to Saturday from 8.30am to 4pm.
