The council has announced parking will be free after 2pm each day for four weeks from Monday, December 5, until Monday, January 2.

Councillor June Evans, council cabinet member for finance, said: “We hope the free parking in Worksop and Retford will encourage residents to visit our town centres for their Christmas shopping and hopefully pick up some fantastic gifts for family friends.

“We also remain committed to supporting local businesses within the district and hope this initiative will be a catalyst for increased trade over the festive period.”

There will also be free parking from 2pm in all council car parks for the Christmas lights switch-on event in Worksop, which takes place on Saturday, November 26.

The event is being organised by Worksop Business Forum in association with Andrea Colton, from Worksop Light Operatic Society, and the council.

The Business Forum is installing more than 70 trees and hundreds of lights in the town centre to give Worksop it’s most colourful Christmas yet.

Bridge Street and Bridge Place will become a bustling hub of Christmas-themed entertainment from noon, with a festive market selling food and gifts ahead of the big switch-on at 5.30pm.

Philip Jackson, forum chairman, said: “This event is not to be missed and is certainly a fantastic way to start off your Christmas celebrations.”

Parking is also free every Sunday in all council car parks and will remain free for the Retford Christmas event on Sunday, November 27.

Stickers advising of the free parking times and conditions will be placed on all parking meters within council car parks.
