Former Rotherham Titans player Rob Walton has died after being struck by a giant wave while on holiday in France.
The, 36-year-old, from Hinckley in Leicestershire, was hit while swimming off the coast of Labenne, in south-west France on Monday, where he was on holiday with his family.
Mr Walton played in the lock position at Championship-level in Birmingham, Rotherham – during the 2005/06 campaign – and Coventry before becoming player-coach at Rugby Lions.
The Titans said: “We are sorry to learn of the tragic death of former Titan Rob Walton, our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.”
And former Titans coach Lee Blackett posted on Twitter: “So sad to hear of the news of Rob Walton’s death after a freak accident in France.
“It was a pleasure to have played with you #RIPbigguy”
