Former Bassetlaw Hospital worker denies sexual assaults

The trial of a Retford man accused of sexually assaulting three elderly patients at Bassetlaw Hospital has begun.

Matthew Shah, 24, of Savile Street, denied all three charges which are alleged to have taken place at the hospital between April and May 2010 while he was working as a carer.

The jury at Nottingham Crown Court heard opening statements on Monday from Michael Auty, prosecuting, who said: “We are concerned with the bathing and cleaning of these three women.”

All three women, two of whom are in their 80s and one in their 60s, suffer from dementia.

Shah was arrested on 17th July 2010 and stated the accusations were ‘ludicrous’ when interviewed by police.

The trial continues.
