Firm announces cheaper travel for South Yorkshire pensioners

Tates Travel has become the latest South Yorkshire bus company to offer pensioners a £1 flat rate fare outside the hours when they can travel free with their bus passes.

According to the Barnsley Retirees Action Group, TM Travel, Waterson’s and Sheffield City Transport are already offering the fare to the elderly for any travel before 9.30am and after 11pm.

The group says Powell’s is committed to introducing a trial scheme and the First South Yorkshire Company - the largest provider of buses in Sheffield - has said it is considering something similar.

Tates Travel have contacted George Arthur, secretary of Barnsley Retirees Action Group, to say the firm will introduce the new fare once adjustments are to its ticket machines.

The moves towards a £1 fare for older people outside concessionary hours have been welcomed by BRAG and the South Yorkshire Freedom Riders, which have campaigned for free travel.

BRAG secretary Mr Arthur said: “We welcome any further moves that make it easier for older people to use public transport and get out and be part of the community.”
