Firefighters spent four hours tackling a large blaze at a Wickes store on Worksop’s Babbage Way last night (May 18).

The fire appears to have started when a large amount of insulation material next to the building ignited and then quickly spread to the inside of the building.

A Worksop fire crew was originally dispatched to the scene after reports of a large rubbish fire were received at just after 11pm.

But two more crews from Edwinstowe and Worksop were then sent to the scene soon after.

Firefighters requested assistance from a specialist rescue team to break into the 50m by 100m building and tackle the fire.

They managed to contain the fire to roughly 30 sq mtrs of internal and external cladding and put the fire out by 3.25am.

The crews used two breathing apparatus, three hose reels, one nine-metre ladder, two positive pressure ventilation fans, two thermal imaging cameras, cutting equipment and an angle grinder.
