Fine for South Normanton man for threatening bar staff

A South Normanton man with mental health problems has been fined after he drunkenly threatened and abused bar staff in Sutton.

Maurice Flaherty, 53, of Alfreton Road, admitted being drunk and disorderly on April 29.

Robert Carr, prosecuting, said the police were called to the Picture House pub when a man began threatening staff and customers.

He said: “They saw Mr Flaherty staggering across the road and had to brake in order not to hit him.”

When officers approached Flaherty, he swore loudly at them and rolled underneath a bench. When he was being pulled out, he flailed and kicked out at the officers before he was arrested.

He was last before the courts on February when he received a suspended sentence for harassment.

The court heard Flaherty suffers from epilepsy and schizophrenia, and had taken medication which had reacted badly with the alcohol he consumed.

Magistrates extended the suspended sentence from one year to 18 months. He was fined £80 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a victim surcharge of £30.
