The new theatre, the fourth in the centre in Lindrick Way, will increase the number of hip and knee replacements carried out by one-third. In the last 12 months alone, more than 2,000 joint operations have been carried out on knees, hips and shoulders.
The theatre features a pioneering air filtration system that ensures the air is sterile, helping the centre maintain its 10-year record of zero hospital-acquired infections.
Simon Weston OBE was invited to open the operating theatre.
He said: “I was delighted to be asked to open the new theatre and thoroughly enjoyed meeting all the fantastic team who do such a great job.
“I can see how the new facilities will benefit the local community and have been very impressed by the passion of the team who deliver excellent levels of patient service.”
Simon told the team at the centre to continue to be the excellent people they are and that they make a real difference to the lives of patients and their families and he thanked them for all they do.
