Day long power cut causes chaos and confusion in Harworth

A major power cut has affected both businesses and residents across the village of Harworth today.

The outage struck shortly after 10am this morning and the large section of the village affected is still without power, with the most up to date information from Northern Powergrid indicating power should hopefully be back after 3pm.

Businesses have been forced to close, including Asda and Aldi supermarkets: a children's nursery was forced to send children home and access to doctor's premises and other buildings was denied as electric doors stayed firmly closed.

Vehicles on Scrooby Road have had to negotiate traffic lights that aren't working, and the main shopping parade was almost deserted as shops and cafes closed their shutters.

Daniel Clarke, 33, of Clarkes Craft Butchers, who is also a Harworth resident, said: “It’s all pitch black at back of shop. We can’t go in the big fridges but at least we are managing to still trade. It’s not a great situation”.

Ali A. at Antalya Barber Shop on Scrooby Road said: "We have no power, and no-one is sure when it will be back on.

"We can keep working but we are usually full and there is no footfall today."

Harworth resident Neil South, 78, was a lone figure outside the shops on his mobility scooter. He said: "I couldn't have a hot lunch or cup of tea so came out to see what was happening.

"I'm going to see if I can get a pint at the Pavilion now."
